Rebecca Buxton

Hello, my name is Rebecca.

My theme is based on cochlear implants.

These are small devices which has some parts that go inside your head and other parts that you wear on the side of your head, held together by a magnet. They can help deaf people hear, not perfectly, but better that traditional hearing aids.

This is a line drawing of an electrode.

Nottingham was the first place in the UK to develop cochlear implant technology. The first boy to have a cochlear implant was born in Nottingham about 30 years ago. Now very young children have the operation as well as adults who think they would benefit from one.

This is a cochlear shape showing the stimulated
                                                           hair cell transmitting sound.

As well as linking to Nottingham, this links to me personally and my experience of wearing one. I am not judging if cochlear implants are a good or bad or suitable for everyone. I am just comment from my experience.
These are nerves in the inner ear tangled.

I have started my ideas from studying the shape and patterns of the cochlear- I have done many drawings of the cochlear, and then progressed on to sound waves, hairs, nerves, electrodes, brains.

                                                      The sound wave energy stimulates
                                                                       nerve endings .

I have lots of different samples, some line drawings, photoshop, photocopies.

A damaged hair cell in the inner ear.

I will next print my final samples in drypoint.

                                                                    Sound travelling.

                                                            Sound impact of electrode.

                                                           Vibration of sound on nerves.

                                                                 Connection to brain
